"Sanctity of a Fool"

by: Herman J. Mosteller, Jr.

Sitting alone as so often
You smile contently
Beneath the shadows of their scorn
You stand defiantly
With their cruel mockery
You find strength
As they ignore but a fool

In their anger and fear of the unknown
You show understanding
As their spiteful ignorance abounds
You are compassionate
When your persecutors are in desolation
You provide comfort
Yet they perceive but a fool

As through your silence
You show wisdom
Within your gentleness
Great strength
In your passion for life
Shines your persona
So verily must I say
Who truly is the Fool?
